is it a viotation of copyright law to use the name of a periodical in the title of a book?

LEGO Star Wars!

for example: a title of a book might be “my adventures with Reader’s Digest”

In this case, yes…I believe it is a violation since any periodical would probably “own” the name. I would check, and obtain any permission needed to use their name. Be prepared to pay a royalty fee to use the name.

It’s not a violation of copyright because copyright applies to complete created works, which a title isn’t.

However it would be misuse of a trademark, and/or “passing off”, either way you’d be in deep doo-doo.

You could get clever: “Reader’s Indigestion” “Reader’s Undigested” and so forth. Feel free to use those or a version thereof, if you want, I’m not bothered.

No. Titles are not protected by copyright law. Please go to copyright.gov to learn about copyright law.

It’s not even a trademark issue. You can write about your experiences with the periodical. Funny things that happened while reading it or whatever.
